One of the changes for 2020 is the updated list of DAS (Delivery Area Surcharge)/Extended DAS ZIP Codes. FedEx stated before that they would add up to 2,000 ZIP codes to this list for this year 2020. This includes changing the existing ZIP Codes between DAS and EAS. This goes the same to UPS, they also has an identical list where 24,600 of 24,628 ZIP Codes are matching to FedEx. The ZIP Codes aren’t the only factor where carriers motivated in agreement.
The DAS/EAS rates, which differed between the carriers in 2019, are most likely alike in 2020 as well. The effect of these changes will be a dual increase. Both the scope of DAS/ EDAS packages will rise, and these packages will be charged by the increased fees (especially commercial deliveries to Extended DAS ZIP Codes, which will see an increase of 22-23%).
See below table for the comparison of changes:
The overall rate increase will affect some shippers more than others. If the shipper regularly uses two or three day, long-zone express, or ships to remote areas, it is likely to be subjected to an increase larger than the announced 4.9%, higher increases to the higher zones, rule ups and downs, and updated DAS/EAS ZIP Codes.
