UPS and USPS Rate Increase for the Year 2021



Effective December 27, 2020, UPS Ground, Air, and International services will increase by an announced average of 4.9% -- matching both the UPS 2019-2020 increase and the FedEx 2021 GRI announced last month. Below is an overview of our 2021 Rates

  • UPS continues to focus on margin improvements for low weight shipments, assigning the biggest increases to the lightest packages in most service levels.

  •  Longer zone Air services will take larger increases than Ground and lower Air zones. 

  • UPS Rate Increase

  • Minimums are going up the most on slowest services.

  • Delivery Area Surcharge ZIP Code Changes. More ZIP Codes than ever will be eligible for DAS surcharges:

  • Moving into surcharges, UPS continues to crack down on undesirable larger packages.

  • Effective January 10, 2021, an Additional Handling charge will be applied to any package with its length plus girth combined exceeding 105 inches.

  • Effective April 11, 2021, Additional Handling and Large Package Surcharge rates for non-Hundredweight Service packages will differ by zone. (This will apply to Hundredweight Service packages effective July 11, 2021)

  • Nearly all surcharges are increasing by more than 4.9%

USPS Rate Increase


In the approved USPS 2021 rate case, First-Class® Mail Metered Letters and Postcards increase 1¢. Retail and Forever® stamps and First Class Mail Flats (up to 1 oz.) prices remain the same. In the proposed changes to shipping prices, Priority Mail® and Priority Mail Express® will increase by 4.1% and 3.5% respectively, but those increases vary by Retail/Commercial, zone, and weight. Below, we share some of the approved 2021 USPS rate increase highlights for mail and packages.


Priority Mail Retail rates will increase by 3% on average, and Commercial Base rates only increase on average 3.6%. Priority Mail senders will see an increased savings between 0.5% and 1.5% for packages weighing less than 6lbs being sent to zones 1 to 4 etc.
